Seachem Prime killing my Plecos!!!

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
Just so no one gets the idea that overdosing with Prime can't cause serious stress, and even immediate death in a fish, it can. I've seen the results close up, and it wasn't a pretty sight. Some species (and even individual fish within a species) are more sensitive to certain chemical reactions, just as some fish can tolerate ammonia/nitrite spikes better than others.

Update:

I have done many 50% water changes, I am up to two 50% water changes a week.

I haven't had any stressed or dying fish.

I conclude that the cause of the problem was most likely adding Prime after the water change, when it should have been added before or during the change.

I have been adding an amount of Prime only for the changed the water. I add it to a cup of tank water and pour it off and on while I am filling the tank with new water from the python.

Thanks for all your help on this guys, now my water is super clean and the fish are happy.

I believe your problem is mainly due to high temperature . I keep my Ac in my house at 85 when we are not home. My water temp. is never over 84. I have a Fx5 but it is not in an enclosed cabinet. It i s next to my tank so tat it does not raise the temp. in my tank. If you have 2 canister filters in an enclosed cabinet that could = 87degrees. I have never had a temp. higher than 85 & I have a Zebra Pleco that likes 84-86 degrees.lol:)
