i live in california so an actual servel is out of the question. it more likely have to be a Savannah cat or another hybrid.

Man, thats gotta suck. California is really strict on exotics arent they?

But technically you could have a 99% serval, just 1% domestic in its genes, and its completely legal in California. But I'm betting it would be extremely hard to find a hybrid with such genes, and I'm guessing it would cost alot of $$$$$$.

Savannahs are really neat cats though, and show alot of dog like behaviour, sometimes playing fetch, and like water.

Heres some good hybrid info : http://www.exoticcatz.com/specieshybrids.html

If you anything else, just ask. :)

I forgot to add, How much are you expecting to pay? F1 Savannah Cats wich are %50 serval cost anywere from $7500 to $10,000 dollars for Males. Most places will only sell males as they are infertile and cannot reproduce. All hybrids and exotic cats as EXSPENSIVE. Just letting you know, a you will still havr to proof your house so they cant get into trouble.

I have a bengal, awesome cat. She's actually got a personality (no offense, cat lovers). I know, its not exactly what you're talking about. One of my good friends has a bobcat. Its gorgeous. They've had him for about 6 years now. He was captive-bred and bottle fed from the day he was born. Be warned, you can take the cat out of the wild but you can't take the wild out of the cat. I'd been around him many times and he was fine with me. But one day I was there and he was mad with furry the minute he saw me. He jumped up and bit me(he could jump as high as thier cieling) and then they pulled him back and I went in a back room. Two guys held him when I left, but he fought them and got away, ran at me and attacked me. He bet me repeatedly and he clawed me (with his back claws because he was declawed in the front) and I needed stitches. But, I still think he's an amazing animal. They just require lots of caution.

I find that the average price for male serval kittens 7-8 weeks old runs around $2000-$3000, females are about a thousand more.

the breeder i talked to was asking $4000 for an all black (i can't remember if it was an f1 or f2). i'm just doing all the research i can, the purchase wouldn't be for a year or so.

Servals gennerally run much cheaper then Savannahs for some reason, you would think a serval would cost alot more then a hybird, but they dont.

Dreamandscheme,
I'm pretty sure that breeder is trying to rip you off. An F1 or F2 Savannah isnt going to cost $4000, and an all black one would be called melanistic, and if it were infact melanistic, it would cost mucho dinero!

www.savannahcatbreed.com Is a USDA Licensed breeder and well known in the exotic cat industry, They are the FIRST Cattery to produce 50% serval savannahs, and the FIRST cattery to produce Habari kittens.

I think you shold research for more then just one year before purchasing such an animal. It is a very hard thing to do.

I just want you to understand youre going to need to devote basicly 100% of your time to this cat, its not like a dog were you can just leave out food and water and go to work, and come back 8 hours later with everything being fine.

You will need to find an exotic vet in your area to treat the cat, as most vets only deal with cats dogs, and rodents, and the occasional reptile. You will need a certified exotic veteranarian, wich is going to be hard to do in California.

You also need to think, what are you going to do if you want to go somewere and cant take the cat? You cant just drop it off at a friends house like you would with a dog or whatever.

I just want this to go smoothly for you, and I want you to know that it isnt something to be taken lightly.

I read about them, ALOT. And ask alot of questions about them from people who own them.
