ive got 2 young males (6 months) with a crown developing on their head so i dont think thats only a feature of older male angels

The hump on the head is NOT, I will repeat for emphasis, NOT a sign of a male angel. In other cichlids yes. When it comes to angels no. My angel with the largest hump is actually a female.

The only sure way is to look at the tubes that extend from their abdomens when breeding.
