Sexing heros notatus

Sorry left out a few key words there as I do - two males won’t work out, two females might?

The shop was selling them as notatus - But I guess you can’t trust the lfs much these days haha. It was interesting to note when I got them they were a deep crimson colour. You could hardly see the spots the colours were so deep and dark. These are defiantly the most “rainbow” and interesting fish I have kept. As a lot of you have said probibaly a tank bred mix of a lot of different species over time. I feel if this is the case, I should separate them and not allow breeding to occur.

I find it depends completely on the two severums. I think any combination can work with them if they establish their pecking order.

I wouldn't be so quick to 100% say they are tank bred mutts. There are so many different catch locations and variations popping up. I have my suspicions that they are mixed, and that they arent any type of notatus sp., but they are still young and still changing color. I dont think its responsible to immediately label them as tank bred. The difference that my notatus from juvenile to adult was crazy.

My advice is to raise them up, see what they turn into, and monitor for aggression. I think you still have a while until they would breed anyhow.
