It seems that he was well loved by his previous owner who donated him to me due to aggression issues, though I believe that the added room and dithers in his tank has eased his aggression quite a bit. Based on the replies I’ve received, I’m fairly confident that he’s a male. Appreciate the help everyone!Welcome!
I've always sexed these by the "beard" as well but I've got one now that has several traits of a male but also has a very small blotch/line in the beard area. It really seems like this use to be a lot to easier to determine (not that it actually was)

As seen here, females have this blue area from under the eyes to the gills whats called a "blue beard" that males do not.
Welcome aboardI need help too. I simply cannot tell. And they are starting to lip lock, they dance around each other first though. Excuse the debris in the tank, they've stirred up the whole tank doing this. I tried to get better photos but only one of them will come out properly.
