Good info and so much for all of that old world, new world baloney.Conner;3809297; said:They are both Opossums. Most people just shorten it to possum, its not actually a scientific name.
The difference is that short tailed opossums are from Brazil and only get to be about the size of a large hamster or small rat, are generally very docile, and can be easily bonded to and kept as pets. Virginia opossums get to be the size of a small dog, and are generally pretty difficult to tame unless you raise one from a very young age. Plus they need much larger enclosures to maintain a captive one.
I have a pretty big one that lives in one of the surrounding trees of my yard. One of natures ugliest creatures but I dont mind it popping up every now and then,it does'nt harm anything.ozz465;3809543; said:Very interesting , the reg possums here are crazy looking.

The link that you already posted suggested that the word possum is more of a slang term which is what I've always suspected.I'm sure you could post more links, heck do what ever floats your boat if you want to get yourself so hung up on terminology.kdrun76;3810858; said:Its not baloney, and if that thing really is from South America, its an opossum.

I could post a dozen more links, but that seems futile.
I don't know about "old world vs new world", but possum is just a slang/shortened version of opossum (as it says in the last link you posted), so not sure what your point is?kdrun76;3810858; said:Its not baloney, and if that thing really is from South America, its an opossum.

That's what I was saying, there was no reason for that person to butt in in the first place.Conner;3816952; said:I don't know about "old world vs new world", but possum is just a slang/shortened version of opossum (as it says in the last link you posted), so not sure what your point is?
They are all opossums, they are just from different parts of the world.
