I have a tempered shower door that I got for making a cold frame in the garden. I got to looking at it and was wondering how it would work out as the front pane on a plywood tank. Its at least 1/4 maybe 3/8 thick, and 3 X 5'. How big a tank could I build? At this point it is only a daydream, but since it appears that several individuals have made such tank here, I figured someone would be able to tell me.

it wouldn't work dude. Not thick enough. If it's 1/4, then don't even bother. If it's 3/8 then well, i probably still wouldn't try it. Water that's 3 feet high is gonna put too much pressure on that piece of glass. And seeing how it's tempered, you can't cut it down. 2 feet high would be reasonable for a piece that thick.
You could make it 3'x5'x2" for a 18g (tank?) could make an interesting guppy wall

Too thin to use.The thing thats had my gears grinding since last summer is one of those tempered glass dining room table tops.Saw one at a garage sale last summer looked to be about 1/2" thick,it was already sold but planted the idea in my head,maybe it could work.
Someone on here has use the table top with success...you know what they say about hindsight, about six yrs ago I has to give away a 4'x6'x5/8" piece of glass and it WASN"T tempered ! I still feel ill
Just my two cents, I am on a barter system with a co-worker that works the flea market on the week ends. He and his wife sell reptiles and supplies. They get a lot of give aways, so I have traded some tempered sliding glass doors and tadpoles for some tanks. They were all 3/8" but they will make awsome snake pens.
Think of who might be able to take the pane on trade for something usable.
go to www.garf.org, they have calculators there, if you have it cut to 18 inches high it will work, i used a coffeetable glass for mine, its a pinch under 1/4, it cost me 2 dollars to have cut. its not tempered.
