Silurus Merdionalis thread

I miss mine so much :(((
Can’t wait to see yours keep growing and growing!
He’s growing alright!
I lost track of this thread; good to see it again. The wels looks great, and it's nice to hear that you will be able to continue forward with it.

Turns out that any species of wels is....like so many other assorted fish species....verboten here in Manitoba. I'll just have to vicariously enjoy yours. :)
In my opinion, he’s very entertaining, mostly at dusk, when he’s swims, probably the most entertaining swimmer over ever seen

Pic taken immediately after introduction. This one looks different than my last one. Old fish had 4 whiskers this one has six and this one has slightly different head structure hmmm….View attachment 1543471
Reminds me of those "meridionalis" the Waterfront SLC got from Wes a while back; there was a short discussion about them in this thread somewhere. Cool fish- good luck! Updates on its growth would be interesting to read.

Very interesting to see. I personally think we are getting two different species in the trade with out knowing it. We could possibly be getting Southern Catfish which are the true Chinese wels and a lesser known species as well that looks similar. I’ve seen some “Chinese” wels that look completely different than mine or your old guy the only thing in common was the amount of whiskers when grown. I won’t go on a limb and say we are getting Soldatovs because those are just near impossible to find but maybe there’s a subspecies or something because they’re not consistent enough with the first couple batches Rodrigo got. Idk. Food for thought.

The last couple pics I have of him before he passed. I was able to obtain this size from 3” in under a year. I was moving houses and reduced tank size and was going to buy a 180g when settled in but the heater malfunctioned and fried my whole collection in the temp tank.

To me this looks much more like a soldatov and much more like a true Glanis then whatever I have. Soldatov also called Russian wels are very close in appearance to Glanis, as well as being very close in size and age. The only issue that causes my doubts this is a soldatov which I’ve hardly seen pics of a live one swimming in a tank is the fact that Wes is the only person I’ve ever heard bring them in and his were color morphs. I texted him a couple years ago on if he could get Lake Biwas or Soldatovs and he said 100% no.

the barbels are different on glanis and soldatovi. Same number, but glanis and soldatovi have their shortest barbels up front under the lip, not the back. Not sure how credible this pic is, but seems to match up. Its pulled from a youtube vid. The last set of whiskers is hard to see. Better on the vid which i dont know how to link 😂💀

That’s interesting. Maybe I’ve seen misidentified Soldotovs. They’re so scarce that I doubt all pics on goggle are correct Id. I’ve come to the conclusion we are looking at two sp. at least. They’re a multiple Silurus sp. that call China home, and multiple farms which house these so for culinary purposes. We need more photos. I doubt there are any more that can give us more solid id.
