Can silver datnoids live comfortably in 100% freshwater. There are many stories of silver datnoids who die in 3-4 years and I want to know from general datnoid keepers, whether a silver datnoid in freshwater is good practice. Also general care is appreciated. Do they eat pellets, can they be in a planted aquarium, any common diseases? Thanks again guys, debating whether to get a silver datnoid or not. Also would buying them small help them transition to freshwater?

Looks like silver. Will take pellets. Won’t eat plants but as big as they get wouldn’t be surprised if some rooted plants may get occasionally uprooted. Long term is a bit difficult to say. All are wild caught from brackish waters. thebiggerthebetter thebiggerthebetter viktor had one and kept getting some skin infections. Similar to Columbian cats kept in pure freshwater. The conclusion of as it was needing some level of salt in the tank.

Can I add aquarium salt? And does that damage plants?

Does aquarium salt work or I need salt meant for saltwater aquarium. Also do salts harm plants? Thanks!

Do you think getting datnoids at a young age can help transition them to slightly salted fresh water or until a certain age, they will develop side effects of freshwater.

I’d imagine yes but long term I just don’t see many members with fully grown adults.

Thanks again for the reply. Since they are relatively cheap in my area (compared to NTT and other species), I will probably take a gamble with the silver. I've just read the thread by thebiggerthebetter thebiggerthebetter and the white cottony growth on them. It seems due to stress, the datnoids will develop this more frequently in freshwater than brackish. If my tank has relatively low stress and a lot of plants, I am hoping that the silver does not develop the disease. I am probably going to keep it 100% fresh since I really want my plants to thrive. Also do you think the white cottony stuff common on silvers will spread to other fish? I'm okay with having to deal with the parasite, but do not want my other inhabitants to contract it. Overall, do you think I should give full freshwater silvers a try or scratch the idea as a whole. Thanks so much! You've been a lot of help!
