even though the red bellied piranha is a schooling fish would it be possible to keep one by itself in a 20 gallon aquarium

rbp arent schooling fish, they are loosly shoaling fish. the diff is they are inherently solitary and stay with a group for protection/feeding advantages. they are fine to keep alone. people have had different experiences with solo rbp. mine was a bad ass he finger chased and everything EXTREMELY agressive others have solos that hide all the time. it depends on the personality of the fish.
my main concern is that a 20 gallon long is too small for one for life. if you got a small P under 4 inches it would be ok for a little while. i know that there is the 20 gallon per fish rule, but just a 20 gallon tank is too small. i would recoment a 40 gallon breeder at the smallest even that is kinda cramped for life. the difference being is that the 20 gallon long is 30 in long by 12 in wide. a 40 gallon breeder is 36 in long and 18 in wide. much better foot print for piranha since it is 18 in wide. a 20 gallon at my local store is about $50 with hood and light the 40 gallon breeder is $70 so for $20 more you have twice the water much better value.
this isn't to say you cant keep one in a 20 g. just not recomended. good luck

I agree, nothing wrong with solitary pygo's. Look at how many solo piraya there are, and some of those are massive! Would still need a fair amount of space though.
hey guys I see I'm up again LOL,umm yea you can do a 20G until hes about 6" then you need to upgrade to a 55G at the least but if you want a massive very aggressive solo like mr. bubbles you need a 90G and I know that sounds big for a solo but thats just the scret to getting that really big size other than water qaulity and nutrion and water temp etc....

whoa, a single red in a 90g? that's a spoiled one, heheh. as for the question, i think solitary reds are fine.
90 gallon is wayy to big for one red in my opinion. if you got a 90 gallon i would get a rhomb with out hesitation. you could fit in about 3 rbp in a 90 gallon for life. a 40 gallon breeder is perfect for one rbp. you could fit 2 for life in a 55 IMO also.
