Smallest species of shark?

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
For an 8' x 3' tank say a 360 gallon tank -

you could go with the following species.

Chain Catshark,
Cloudy Catshark,
Izu Catshark,
Australian Marbled Catshark (A. macleayi)
Bali Catshark (A. baliensis)
Indonesian Speckled Epaulette (H.freycineti)
Indonesian or Hasselt's Bamboo (C. hasselti)

* what all these species have in common is that they are all max out at 2 ft or less in length. But most of these are very hard to find.

A 8ft L x 4ft Wx 2 ft T tank (480 gallon) would allow for more choices. Such as the folllowing species.

Arabian Bamboo (C. arabicum)
Gray Bamboo (C. griseum)
Coral Catshark (A. marmoratus)
Papuan Epaulette (H. hallstromi)
Speckled Epaulette (H.trispeculare)
Northern Wobbegong (O. wardi)

If I build a 8x4x2 plywood tank, what thickness glass would I need? Anyone know?

I'd go 1". I've got a bunch of 8x4x3 tanks that use 1" and when I look at them, I think anything less would be pushing it a bit for that volume of water.

I think I would want to go a bit thicker than 1 inch if I could find the right price. 1 inch seems a bit thin for a 8x4 tank.

If you are doing a plywood aquarium your glass thickness will depend more on your depth and bracing than anything else. I built my aquarium and it is 36 in deep and 16 ft long and 6 wide and I used ¾ in glass but I have 4 in box steel bracing so my glass is not holding structure pressure. So I think 1 in for a braced plywood tank is a bit over kill.

Pics?

Well I would want to have a single window and with it being 8 feet long I would be worried about flew. Yes I would brace it well but the glass would still take a lot of pressure. This is a long way off though. And I might be moving across the country so building a big tank now would be a little pointless. I just had a few thoughts and figured its better to be informed for when I do do this. I will be helping my uncle build a tank soon though that should be a few thousand gallons. ( tank specs aren't finalized)

are any of those listed sharks freshwater? I had 2 columbian sharks that are freshwater when young and can either stay freshwater, or to grow BIG and have a longer life, slowly turn to marine. I went out of town often so i had a "fish sitter" who accidently killed them... :/ anyway... I have a freshwater aquarium and will be building a 300g soon and i wanted to know if i need to go salt water to get another shark.
