I have a 29g and am thinking of putting a sunfish or two in there. It will have an airstone, plants, ect... What type of sunfish is smallest? I looked at longears and they got small but could not find any for sale?

black banded sunfish, i think they get 2-3" tops.
longears get 6-8" and you might keep one in a 29 gallon, but it wont be happy
ive got 6 or so 6" sunnies in a 125 and i think its overstocked.

Any of the Enneacanthus species will work well in a small tank. You could probably get away with a couple of OSS (orangespotted sunfish) in a 29. Any other species I would keep solo.
If you want a lepomis species, the Bantam sunfish (I forget the scientific name for it) will also work.
banded sunfish, blue spot and bantum are probably the smallest normal sunnies, you can keep 10-20 pygmy sunfish in a 29 gallon tank, just make sure its planted or has good rock caves.

Does no one know about pigmies. OR is that what bantam is. Their small and colorful but you might have to go to florida or georgia. O I just looked at your profile and that's where you are. GO OUTSIDE. JK
