well....i'll just cross Cichla off my list then.....Nope.
Seiichi Hamada had a kelberi at 24". I think his interms were about 20" or so.

They're awesome fish, and its a great experience to grow them out from fingerling to adult. I say go for it man and just upgrade when it's time. I was drawn to Cichla and started with a 75g and upgraded every time I felt that they needed more room.well....i'll just cross Cichla off my list then.....
so i'm thinking about getting a Kalberi again lol
atm, 125g but ill have a bigger one next year when my Dovii, Jaguars, Motaguensis, etc need an upgrade. The Kelberi are only about 3" so I would be growing it out in a 29g to start and then bumping him up to 55g, 75g, etc etc as he grows just like I do all my fish. I have 12 tanks set-up atm, and a few dozen stored away. What's growth rate like on the Kelberis? How big is your tank?
In a 29g even at 3", they will fight like crazy and kill each other. I learned that lesson when I started with bass. I would start them in the 55 at least.atm, 125g but ill have a bigger one next year when my Dovii, Jaguars, Motaguensis, etc need an upgrade. overall, i'm looking into a 7ft, 265g
I end up selling a lot of my stock and thin the herd as things begin to mature and I have lots of buyers who LOVE when I bring them big healthy cichlids

The smallest is the C. nigromaculata ... but its really rare to find it up ...
They look kinda like monos but have four bars instead of three. I've seen bigger ones in a aquarium, but like intermedia have never seen pics of large ones in the wild. I've seen large 24"+ kelberi imported but never seen either of the other two imported anywhere near that size.
