Snakehead Fishing in New Jersey

Snakeheads are known to eat small pets and children. There have been documented cases of children snatched from their beds at night in some Asian countries. In the wild, they have a varied diet. When they are in the water, they will eat anything from fish to dolphins to crocodiles. On land, they will eat deer, boar, dogs, wolves, people, pets, and anything that is 2/3 of their total length. They also have the ability to walk on land for days out of water. In fact, they are almost like amphibians. Inside their powerful, bone crunching jaws are rows of razor sharp teeth. Combine this with the fact that they can grow to 5 feet long, you've got yourself a monster. They make alligators seem like guppies.

This is the most ridiculous statement I have ever heard in my entire 40 years of life!

Would you like it if they lived in your local waters and started eating the fish you fish for? Just look at how many were caught in such a small waterway.

I like how you ignored my statement " Snakeheads have been in United States for 20 years". Largemouth bass eating lot of these young snakeheads like candy! BTW largemouth bass are found in all snakeheads' areas in United States, included Hawaii.

lmao

And how do you control the expanding snakehead population?

their solution was to poison the entire lake when they first found them, which also failed. The snakeheads did die, but not completely making their efforts useless. People need to stop freaking out about snakeheads, are they destructive? yes, they are a top predator just like bass and pike. But the fact is, they arnt going anywhere and as Mn_rebel points out, they have been here for sometime, their population has increased, and they are not the only fish in the water. seems like they havnt destroyed everything like F&W said they would

Exactly! Snakeheads wont consume any fish larger then it can basically swallow. Thats the same rule that applies to almost all predatory fish. If anything the snakeheads will probably benefit the bass population.

So far I hasn't see any evidence points the snakeheads being destructive and upset up the ecosystems. The studies revealed that northern snakehead's main diet were mostly topminnows and small bluegills.

a few years ago northern pike took over my brook trout spot. angered me so much I became a pike fisherman ahaha. seriously though, snakeheads are tasty. Just start fishing for them. A fish caught while fishing is a good day fishing in my book

No they will not, don't be so dramatic. They coexist with many other species of fish in their native waters.

In THEIR ecosystem they coexist perfectly and NATURALLY. This is an invasive species in our ecosystems, therefore the north american ecosystem is neither equipped nor prepared to deal with such a voracious predator. With nothing that can take down mature snakeheads they will, like joe jaskot said, destroy our native fish populations. These fish are apex predators, basic ecology man. I would do research and refine my opinion before making assumptions like that. THAT is part of the reason why we're having problems with invasive species in the first place. And in response tp the idea that if they've been here for 20 years and there are still other fish left, well give it some time. This is an issue that will develop over time and by the time we realize the damage, it's too late. Without a doubt i will be flamed for this but any educated opinion, ie fish and wildlife, ecologists, etc will support this.

Oh yeah Pikes and trout do not mix very well when shares same water but I always pulled 30+ inches pikes out of trout lakes.
