I start all my snakes in a plastic tub regardless of age. It's far easier to look out for parasites in a sterile environment than naturalistic ones. Also, for high humidity species tubs can work as wonders.
Once they pass the quarantine, I then either move them out to the nicer enclosures if they're sizable, or keep them in tubs until they reach a certain size.
As a permanent home, tubs definitely are a bit cruel IMO.
