Hi guys & gals:
Im new to MFK, But have been checking out your threads for along time.
Excellent site.Excelent info.
Anyways, I have been dooing research on the possibility of housing a west coast
Spiny Dogfish,(mud shark) up here, in a 500 gal tank. Dimentions are 8'x4'x31"tall
This research is for the future maybe 1-2 years down the road.
-is this shark suitabble?
-should this be a shark only tank?
-what spesies would make sutable tank mate?
Also logistics of keeping A west coast wolf eel as i have a 170 gal tank Dimentions
48"x24"x31"tall
These are cool local species that are easy for me to get as they are in my back yard so to speak.
any and all info is apreciated and respected.

Ijust cant find much info on these
in my area and i have much research to go before i try. thanx

Well I don't know alot about that species so sorry I can't help you out there but as for tankmates it is always best to have a shark only tank. But if you do want something in there for a tankmate I suggest a marine betta. I have a marine betta in with my bamboo sharks and they all get along very well.

Woah not a big fan of salt water but those are awsome :(

ive always wanted a salt water tank and be able to dive and catch my own fish :)

If my memory serves me - and it usually does.

The Spiny dogfish gets to be about 4' maybe a bit more in length.

With swimming or most swimming(as the case may be) sharks the tank you described - sharks lover is too small to house it for it's whole life. You will need a shark pool that is at least 10-12' in diameter, to get one.

If your looking for a species of west coast sharks that would fit in your 8' long x 4' wide x 31" tall tank - may I recommend - the Horn shark. Your tank would basically be perfect for one or two horns for their entire lives(and they can live to be nearly 20 years old).

And for sharks - it's generally best to have it as a species tank, only.

By the way - leave to eel to the smaller - 170 gallon tank.

I don't think they would be a good option for an aquarium. I have never seen or heard of them for sale for one, and they get kinda big. I have caught one pushing 5' fishing before. They are a type of shark that has to stay in constant motion to breath, the sharks people usually keep are the ones that lie on the bottom all day. I would recommend a round tank, something more like a barrel or like a commercial live fish well. I think the wolf eel would be a good choice since they don't move around too much. How are you going to chill the tank?

I have 1 chiller that will chill a 200 gal tank.
also a buddy who owns a commercial refrigeration refurbishing buisness who ows me allot of favors,he told me it wouldent cost me a penny to rig up a large skale chiller and thermostatic controlls, he has all the stuff already in stock.

i catch spiny dogs at least once a week while fishing and wolfies 4 or 5 times a year in my dungeoness crab traps.
they look cool, most spiny dogs dont get bigger than 30-36 inches here and slow growth rate.
so just thought they might be an option.

the only other shark I have caught localy was a 6gill 2 years ago at about 7ft 250-300 lbs
deffinatly not an option (LoL!!!)
