Hello friends I live in a state where freshwater stingrays are illegal and I was planning to set up a 200 gallon 6ftx2.2ftx2.2ft aquarium. In addition to them being illegal my tank is too small for most species of stingrays. When I asked my lfs about alternativs they had no clue on what to add, I was also planning on adding larger carnivourus fish such as a Gymnothorax polyuranodon moray eel and/or fire eel, an african butterfly, an as of yet undecided type of catfish, and some red tailed barracudas. So can you think of any alternatives that are simular to stingrays in behavior and appearance that would fit well with the planned tank?

Don’t think there’s an equivalent but could try freshwater flounders, most available are brackish. Will work in a 200g.

I’ve asked myself the same question over the years as well, unfortunately though, rays are quite unique creatures and trying to find something similar isnt easy...

Some examples people have thrown at me over the years as fish “similar” to stingrays (and i use the term loosely) include: Borneo Sucker fish, freshwater flounders and there was one more fish that escapes my mind atm...

You could try discus but not with those other fish you mentioned. The care is similar, and shape is also similar. With obvious differences. Also prices can be similar. Might be able to have a really nice set up with plants, unlike with rays lol.

Oh, i finally remembered the 3rd recommendation, it was a freshwater sawfish from an LFS i used to visit before they closed down...

Cant beileve i forgot that one considering how hard i laughed when i first heard an LFS try and tell me they would make a good pet if i could get one...

I laughed especially hard since they dont even remotely look close to a ray...
