Stocking 125g with cherry shrimp

I would like to stock my new 125 gallon tank with fish that would allow me to keep a cherry shrimp colony going as well. Is this possible? The tank will be pretty heavily planted. Any suggestions?
 
Its absolutely possible. Where do your fish interests lie? You could keep cories, plecos, small tetras, hatchetfish, pencilfish, microrasboras, dwarf gourami, etc etc etc.

As far as larger fish go, in a well planted tank you may get away with discus.
 
I'm thinking possibly a mix of small tetras right now, though I know the kid will want to throw a beta or something showy in there at some point. I also have kept siamese algae eaters in all my tanks.

I like the idea of tetras. Cardinals are awesome, I have Rams, Cardinals, and an Oto in my 29g that I'm starting to plant. It's a fun combo, the Cardinals are inseparable.
 
rams won't work very well with shrimp.

Tetras should be just fine, depending on species.

There is nothing (IMO) more spectacular than a really large group of small schooling fish in a big tank. The display something like 100 rummynose makes is gorgeous.

I had a group of 25-30 bleeding heart tetra's in a 125g planted tank once, and it was amazing to watch them school and swim through the plants.

I would aim for a school of 75-100 of the smaller tetra species, or 50-60 of a mid size species. Then you could add corydoras for the bottom, and some otocinclus to help with algae control.

That would be one pimpin tank buddy :thumbsup:.

I agree. My 2 rams demolished 17 ghost shrimp in a week.
 
If you are really going into shrimp keeping and breeding, I won't suggest any other livestock in there except those shrimps.:)
