I think one by itself wouldn't do well. I do think a pair of Bolivian Rams would be far more entertaining if you can definitely get one of each sex. You will get to see genuine cichlid behavior in a much smaller and peaceful package and they will love to sift through that sand. Good luck!

Also, if you want something cool for the top area of the tank Hatchetfish would fit in great.

I’m not overly picky on colour or swimming level, just one last thing to complete my tank, so ideally a “centrepiece”, rather hen another school. Not opposed to a pair vs single fish, but something that will get along with the other fish (that’s my main concern)

I was thinking an angel but, chances are, the neons would be a snack. How about a singular or pair of keyhole cichlid/s? They aren't flashy but have the cichlid personality, are very peaceful and cover all of the water levels. I'd love to have them but im limited to one tank at the moment )

Honestly, I think the best idea is the one you already had. Go with the Bolivian Rams. You won't regret it. They are cool little fish, very entertaining. Where are you getting your fish from?

A friend of mine suggested a possible angel as well, but I had the same concern about my neons. Just looked into the keyholes, they’re neat! Any concern with not having them in a large group??

OK, just making sure it wasn't from Petco or Petsmart. I think an Angel will get too big and also could be a threat to your neons. A pair of Keyholes could be an awesome addition, I just personally can't remember ever seeing them available.

I personally have never kept Keyholes but from reading about them it seems they can be a little shy. Maybe someone who has kept them can weigh in. You wouldn't have that problem with the Bolivian Rams
