Keep in mind cichlids can change as they get older. You may get something different as an adult. These will and can get over 3ft in Home aquariums if taken care of properly. Not too tricky to feed but feeding tongs will help and readily take food if water is clean.

I 100% agree. Their behaviour now does not warrant their behaviour in the future in any way shape or form. In a 7ft tank that is 280 gallons how large do you think I could grow the eel to with clean water etc?

I have looked into those eels quite a bit as well, that eel will have no problem in 100% freshwater but I would confirm what the importer/store currently has the eel in (if it’s brackish or fresh) cause you’ll want to do a long acclimation if it’s in a mix. Tlindsey is right about the feeding, I read multiple accounts on this forum about someones eel being outfed by more aggressive tankmates as they can be very shy. I would also escape proof the lids and avoid any hang over back filters. I know you said you’ll have two fx6s but my current experience would tell you to add a sponge filter ?

Steve’s exotic fish shop online has a 12 inch for $200 and a 7-8 inch for $120 btw! Good reference for size/price! Let us know and please post a pic if you do!

Are you in Aus too?? I haven't even heard of Steve's exotic fish yet but seems like they would be worth checking out! I was going to head to aquarium central to have a look at theirs but he's 20cm and $270. I will still go have a look and a chat but looks like Steve's aquarium is the way to go!

Damn, didnt realize you were in Aus, coz saw a FB Ad recently that was selling them from a local distributor that ships around the country... shame i cant remember the name or i’d pass it onto you...

but as for feeding question: the shortest amount of time it took one of my eels to eat from tongs was approx. 2 weeks???

the longest it took was about 4-5months before my most stubborn one would take food from me, so i ended up randomly leaving food in after lights out in hopes he would eat then fish out the leftovers in the morning...

also, one thing to keep in mind that i forgot to mention before is if you have a lot of activity in the tank the eels maybe more shy, where as with less activity you may see them venture out sooner and more often swimming around the tank...

As for the size question, the smallest one i got when it was around 12” long and when i sold him and was easily pushing 20-24” long...

the largest one i had was probably close to 30-32” long and relatively fat for this type of eel...

So just to summarise my trip to the aquarium today, the guy basically said what's been said here so I was really impressed with his knowledge! He's also had some first hand experience with them. I didn't get to see the G. Polyuranodon because they weren't in store but they can be ordered in with a special order and it was mentioned that the supplier keeps them in freshwater. He said they were really personable which is why I like them so much in the first place but also I'm a sucker for oddball fish lol

He suggested tight fitting lids as mentioned here. I also asked him about stocking to which his answers were similar as well. Said the loaches and sharks could become a snack, particularly at night and that my Oscar and polleni would likely eat him while he is smaller but might be okay when he is older and larger considering they get over 3ft. Also said that they get large heads and can open their jaws really wide, so all in all I think getting one would be something I'm interested in for the future but probably not now in this set up. I don't want to have the eel become an expensive snack nor any of my other fish and parting with my Oscar and polleni would be hard bc they've grown on me lol. The guy said I could try but of course there is a big risk in that for most inhabitants so I think I will play it safe

I know this is an older thread, but I’m just wondering if you kept them together or if they were in separate tanks? Also how long did you have them to be at those sizes? Just trying to gauge on how big of a tank would be needed for these guys and if they can be kept together?

They were all kept together in an extremely heavily decorated tank with lots of caves for them to hide in so they basically each had their own space…

as for the sizes, they arent super fast nor super slow growers… depending on how much they eat etc, i would say my smallest once went from 12” - 20”+ in about 2 years give or take…

Peaceful fish that arent overly active and most importantly can’t fit in their mouth…

i noticed when they were housed with my overly active flying foxes they tended to hide a lot more, whereas when i got rid of them they seemed to pop their heads out a bit more…
