I'm creating this as I saw a thread from 2009 about this with many people claiming sturgeon will not live in tropical temperatures with excuses of things such as 'lack of oxygen in warmer water' etc...

I bought a my Sterlet last week and its about 8" long. I took it straight from the cold pond water in the shop and floated the bag in the tank for a while and then let the fish go.

When it was first in the warm water it was kinda freaking out breathing really quick and swimming quite fast, but I knew it was moving and not looking sick at all, so I left it. The next day it was eating left over food on the bottom and breathing at a normal rate.

The fish is really happy, always swimming around the bottom and is looking really healthy and is eating well.

This is only a temporary measure as it will go in the pond later on in its life. (I know it may be stressful trying to adapt to cold water again but I've learned to trust myself, try things like this and closely observe the fish for its welfare.

I did this as a matter of principle as people on here suggested not to and the fish person at the store said not to, but hey, if i put it in and it was in any freaking out, I would have put it in to the pond.

Moral of the story? Use common sense and knowledge to try things others may not.

The problem is not temporary warm water, but they need summer/ winter fluctuations of the water temperature. That's why almost all tank kept sturgeon die young.

x2.

It's been in there a week which is not long enough to say that it will work out long-term; come back in six months and tell us how it did.

I dont see how any time period can come in to effect? If the Sturgeon can live fine for 1 week, then why cant it live for 2 weeks? 10 weeks? 20 weeks? 100 weeks?....

why can you live with a blood pressure of 190 for weeks and months but not years?

The warm water pushes your sturgeons metabolism on its limits. Thats why he will die soon. Sturgeons are anadromous fish. That means they can live in freshwater and saltwater. They migrate over vast distances and have no boundries. Yet there are no sturgeons in tropical habitats. There are none in the nile, congo, sambesi, amazon...Nature already did your so called experiment for hundreds of millions of years and it seemed not sucessful. So why don't you accept that and give the creature, which lives under YOUR mercy the proper habitat that it needs for its health and well being?

^This, absolutely true.

Yeah, of course you 'all gang' up on me because I've proved people wrong so many times before. I could very easily be wrong this time, but I've learned to try things rather than listen to other peoples opinions. The fish is going in the pond as well, I've already said that. I would never risk the fishes life to try and prove a point. Thanks for the debate 'DariusAmurdarja' your answer was actually very constructive.

I could survive with terminal cancer for a week, most likely. Not everything that makes you sick kills you immediately.

No need to gang up. Just telling you facts. Southeast Asia has a huge fish breeding industry. Caviar is very lucrative, yet they house no sturgeons. You wonder why? Please do that little fellow a favor and put him into cold water. Thats what he needs. Thats not an opinion, its an fact. Your "experiment" will fail and i told you the reasons.
