Just my opinion, but I wouldn't want to mess around with an overflow box at all. I would scrap the 10 gallon tank and get a plastic storage container of the appropriate size, or the planter idea described by

above, to use for the sump. Drill it and install a standpipe or side overflow pipe to gravity flow back into the main tank. No siphon worries!
