Super Red Asian Arowana Breeder

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
Here are just snapshots of the farm. We only make use of a third of the total land to build 20 ponds. I had in the past helped investors from various countries built their own farms through joint ventures, etc. As this is a highly profitable business, many investors from overseas tried to build farm all across the region. Most people believe that the water flowing from Kapuas River (the largest river in Indonesia) is the main reason why Super Red Arowana could be bred naturally and produce the best quality Arowana. If anyone is interested to visit our farm or to invest, PM me.. I'd be happy to share a few tips :)

Hello CheckJr,
I have never kept Asian Arowana but I do have some relevant fish husbandry and breeding experiences if you`d like my opinion. There is a big difference between pond culture and tank culture as I am sure you already know. If you have 40 fish in a pond it is statistically impossible for them all to be the same sex unless your selection process is completely wrong. Just because you did not get any fry after 2 years on 3 seperate occasions does not mean all fish are the same sex or they did not spawn.

To answer your question, one method to sex fish is to observe the behaviour between an unknown fish and a KNOWN male fish. Another slightly more scientific method is to take a small blood/serum sample and test for levels of plasma steroids - specifically teststerone although I dont know how easy this is to do in Indonesia. Since your working with large adult fish, I would recommend canulation for eggs (anethetising and inserting a slim silicon tube into ovaries to extract immature eggs) for positive confirmation of females. Alternatively, you could simply "squeeze & milk" mature fish for sperm. Mature males should express milt quite readily and this is a very simple procedure which may not need anethetising if your fish are calm or often handled. Those remaining fish not expressig milt may be female or immature males.

I would be most interested in a farm visit to your property next year (2008) although I am more interested in hormone induced fish farming. I am always ready to learn new things and do have some large and small ponds myself as well as some recirculating tanks. Please feel free to instant Message or email me for more detailed help with canulation. I will email you a little closer to my fish trip.

Hi Fishdance,
First of all, let me say that I really appreciate the reply since I'm not too familiar with all the technical and scientific approach. So any insights is really helpful. As for the technique that you described:
1. To keep 2 arowana in the same tank is usually a suicide act since they would fight till death. It is well known among so called Arowana 'experts' that if you MUST keep more than 1 in the same tank, the number should be greater than 4. This way, they still fight but not fatal.
2. I'm not too familiar with taking blood sample and will look into it. But have found out that DNA testing is very costly.
3. I haven't heard of this technique either (canulation for eggs). Can you please describe it in more detail? is the equipment readily available for purchase?
4. "Squeeze & milk", although it is very effective for certain species, this is taboo according to Arowana 'experts'. The reason being if you squeeze too hard and the one that you squeeze happens to be the female fish, it will die because of the egg burst. And nobody bothers to try
this method since once upon a time, a few dare souls tried and their fishes died (according to the legend that I heard when I first started :)). And to prove otherwise would be a huge bet considering the price of a matured Arowana (not to mention all the immature eggs inside.. who would dare to gamble?)

Once again, I really appreciate your effort to post them. I would be glad to show you around (the farm and the city) if you come to visit West Kalimantan.

most indo and malyasia farms are not as well known as singapore is mainly because singapore guys speaks english and starts their own forum. indo and maly farms are prob better in quality but if they are willing to import ONE fish to EACH hobbyist thats in Canada, I bet a lot of people will be interested.

Hi hatorhanzoe,
from what I gathered, there's a huge community for Asian Arowana enthusiast in Canada. But I'm not quite understand about 'importing ONE fish to EACH hobbyist'. Are you suggesting that we give away ONE fish for EVERY hobbyist in Canada to promote our farm? (cause that would be a lot of money :))
