Tank mates for Severum?

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
Geos (except brasiliensis), guianacara, milder acara types, gold saum green terrors, angelfish, mesonauta, high bodied tetras, pink tail chalceus, lot of different plecos and catfish, arowana... some of the fish I've kept with severums. Wouldn't do salvini or pearlscale cichlids with sevs, too aggressive imo, as already mentioned.

...also various rainbowfish, pearl gouramis... probably others I'm forgetting....

Cool. What kinds of catfish have you kept with sevs?

Wow, some would be going back to the dark ages... but some I remember well are both types of raphael cats (spotted, striped), two or three species of farlowella, pictus cats...

Severums are from South America, from east of the Andes, and are soft water species, so as many have said above Geophagines, Pike cichlids, from those same Amazonian waters would make great tank mates.
The Central American species you mention such as Convicts and Salvini, are hard water species and on an entirely different aggression and territorial level, so not so great.
BPs are also on a different aggression scale, and are also man induced mutant cichlids, not real species, so on principal, I tend to reject them.
Pearscale is a generic name, that means different cichlids in different placee, so I can't comment because I don't know what that common name refers to.
Vieja is another Central American genera, can be very aggressive, like hard water so probably not a good mate for severs unless the tank is over 300 gallons.
