So last fall I ended up getting a livingstonii, at the time I didnt know what he was, but figured it out once he started showing breeding colors. Now i think this fish is just awesome and want to try breeding them because i really have not seen them locally. I didn't have any luck finding a female so I bought 6 livingstonii at 2" i know it will be a long while before they are breeding size. I have read conflicting things that say the female will have no color on her at all, but then I also recall reading some where that says the females can have slight blue coloration on/around her head. So I was just wondering those who have experience with these fish how the females look. I know these fish are no where near the size where you can sex them, just trying to gather information before they get to that size. Any info you have on these fish would be appreciated.

Anyways here is my male he is about 6.5" and just a beautiful fish the day we got him i would have never know he would be such a beautiful fish.

they are tough and extremely hardy i have a female they are very beautiful fish! i would recommend putting them on pellets

Some females will have no blue and some females will have a slight blue coloration by the head, it just depends. Males such as yours will be much more beautiful than females. Males can grow up to 11" but its more likely they'll get 9 or 10 inches when fully grown. They're one of my favorite malawi cichlids, I have a large male as well.

& I notice you live in WI, whereabouts in WI?

Yes very close to aquatics unlimited, we go there just about every week.

Love that store. I go to Hoffer's and AU like once a paycheck haha. There's a lot of Nimbos on here lately. Livingstonii are very interesting in their hunting behavior, playing dead and then shooting off like a rocket to nab their prey.

I've never seen mine act dead like they do when hunting, I think thats only with wild n. livingstoniis but I could be wrong...I so wish I lived in milwaukee or closeby like you guys...there aren't any good pet/fish stores in southern wisconsin

^^Haha yeah, I thought it sucked having to drive 30 minutes to get there...
I have seen several N. livingstonii, in captivity, use the "play dead" technique, but there weren't any food sources nearby so I don't know what their deal was hahaha funny/interesting to see though.
