can a terrarium be used as an aquarium or is the silicon different(not as strong? not waterproof? leaks chemical{which wouldnt make sense})? why are they sold as terrariums and not aquariums?

Sometimes terrariums are listed as that because either they leak or because they have glass thats too thin to support the weight of the water. Aquarium glass is far thicker than the terrarium glass usually

^ As andrew mentioned, terrium glass most if not all the time is thinner compared to aquarium glass and is NOT designed to withstand pressure pushing out against it when filled with water like an aquarium...

So if you are planning on using one as an aquarium, i would advise strongly against it, to prevent doing damage to your property / house...

thanks for the info guys. however how can you tell the difference if you buy it second hand... provided the person selling it doesn't know either?

im not sure about this but you can find this stuff out on google search.

a 10-30 gallon tank will have 1/4th-1/3rd inch thick glass.
a 75-100 will have 3/4th-1" thick glass.

and silicone is silicone terrarium or aquarium

but as for the actual glass panels themselves, if they are structurally different?I don't know. They could certainly be made differently as there is no need to make terrarium glass as strong as the aquarium glass and thus the manufacturers would use a weaker, more cost effective glass for the terrarium. Or they could be the same exact thing, you could always do a test fill outside and leave it for a while to see if it cracks.

terrariums should not be used as aquariums if they have already housed reptiles.the reptiles secrete oils that are harmful to fish.bleaching is the only way to get rid of it but it would have to be done twice but it would also have to be washed thoroughly more then once to get the bleach off as well

Why not just pass on the unknown tank and buy something that is for sure? Better safe than sorry.
