Most of the adult texas cichlids (and Carpintis) that I have seen don't have much of a nuchial hump. My vote is male, but it is hard to tell from your pictures.

Yours looks a lot like mine, and I've been told (by many reliable sources (Jason_S, and AquaMojo to name a few)) that it is actually a cyanoguttatus. I'm not arguing, just thought you'd like to know. I'm still just calling mine a 'Texas' cichlid.

Hm. Yours does look a lot like mine. Interesting. What was throwing me off is all the texas' I'd seen have spots on their sides. Maybe that's the difference.

In any event, other than running to the store to get batteries and make a go for clearer pictures, are there and sure fire ways to distinguish between male and female?

Thanks,

zek
