Growth rate seems very fast up untl 5 inch - then slows down a little bit after that.

This is a photo of a JD that I bought back in January 2010 - 3/4 of an inch

And this is him now in October 2010 at 4.5 inch

JD are slow to medium growers - some people say they can get to 8 - 10 inch in slightly over a year but I have grown two males to adults and that took 2 years for them to get to 8 - 9 inch. Obviously tank size and tank mates will determine the outcome and some people can get them to hit full size in 12 months or less.

As for Texas they seem quite fast growers, My Texas was 5 inch in July and he was not even an inch in April so that goes to show how fast they grow.

higher temperatures and good frozen/pellets will ensure fastest growth rates... my texas is 8-9" after 2 1/2 years and is a female... she is big!! my dempsey was slower growing with these conditions but got to around 7" in a 1.5 years...RIP... texas reaked havok.... on all my community and during the night so never saw any deaths coming... apparently they can be highly territorial and she don't lock jaws... she hits and rips till they run and eventually die... this encludes a much larger midas i tried to keep with her... she wanted to breed, he didn't fertilize eggs and felt wraith... good luck with your tank and keep an eye on your texas.... she did lock jaws with dempsey but when he didn't fertilize she killed him... the Midas just ran...
