Hi all,

I purchased a flowerhorn yesterday, she is a confirmed female having already laid eggs from being next to another tank with a male in at the shop. I'm not after a breeding setup I just added this in incase it could be that she is trying to pair off with one of my other fish? She was an electric blue colour not dissimilar to a EBJD before getting her home.

When I got her home she had flushed black. From the back of the tank it looks purple almost. Her fins have gone black, and most of her body. You can still see the bright blue on parts of her.

She is really, really black, I can post photos if it helps. I have had her for a day now and she is still as black as before. Will she get her colour back?

The black color is her showing stress. The stress can come from several sources: The water chemistry in your tank could be different from what she is used too, check your PH immediately(ideal range for these FH is 7.0-7.6). Her new tank mates could easily be stressing her out as she is still trying to feel out her new environment and tank mates. The black will go away as she settles in to her new home. Keep us updated.

Thanks :) I did rearrange the tank last night to try to get the territories mixed up and this morning and it's just made her super aggressive trying to pair with my ebjd. That could explain the colour.

She's going to have to be moved to my six foot because they are trying to pair off so much and I don't want her to breed with him, it will cause uproar. Maybe a male would have been better!
