I believe that Thailand is known for fishing "farms" that have ponds stocked with monster gamefish from around the globe? It's the place to go for Redtail Cats, Arapaima and many other desirable giants.

I would hope and assume that these businesses are regulated in such a way as to prevent the possible escape and introduction of these fish into natural waterways?

Tilapia? They don't need no stinkin' Tilapia...

Why don’t they just put the tilapia in a wig and dress? That generally seems to be their go to solution. Let’s be honest, when someone mentions Thailand, world class fishing isn’t the first thing that comes to mind.

Ok then my peers must be wrong? Looks like no info is reliable these days.

That merely reflects on your perception.

You've been collecting fish in Thailand too!!! What's the nitrate levels in the rivers over there!! Lol.
Rivers, generally zero. But some clogged up canals with runoff from farms maybe quite high.

Oh, come now, duanes duanes , don't be such a wet blanket. I mean, it's not as though there are all kinds of casual aquarists crossing species willy-nilly in their basement aquariums, is it?

And they're not choosing which species to work with in their "projects" based solely upon what sounds cool, are they?

And of course they are being ultra-cautious about not selling or giving away or releasing any of their creations to prevent them from polluting the wild genetic pool, aren't they???

We're not constantly seeing questions posed here on MFK, asking if an ABC fish could be crossed with an XYZ fish, and what it would look like and what we should call it, are we?

And we don't read rebuttals from the crossbreeding guys, telling us there's nothing to worry about because they're very responsible, and that anyone commenting negatively about their actions is just silly.

Yeah.....nothing to worry about here... :uhoh:
there is now a FB group a few dozen strong bent on remaking the flowerhorn out of fish that are more fertile, because allegedly the amphilophus genes lead to flowerhorns being infertile... they are using all of the amatitlania species

That’s a bit silly that they can’t figure out how they got into the waterways. Every Thai New Year, people follow Buddhist tradition and release all sorts of fish, exotics included, into their waterways for good luck or Karma. In fact, there are roadside vendors along waterways selling bagged fish of all varieties for this very purpose
