Well since you shot these wide open meaning the lowest fstop you can get, then the only way to compensate for underexposure is to use slower shutter speed or higher ISO or both in some cases. If your pics were shot let's say at F8 then you would lower it 4 stops down to something like F4 or something. Since you don't want to go higher than ISO 800 then your only option is to use slower shutter speed, but if you go too low it would cause motion blur and if not low enough it would still be underexposed. This is why most aquatic photographers prefer using remote flash so that they would have enough light to shoot at settings that wouldn't cause motion blur, have enough DOF, etc.
Understood-

Really appreciate the info and time you have taken to help me with this Sir....
I have had a few problems with going remotely---But will be their soon enough---Just waiting for my gear to get back from being customized.....Then I will be setup finally to do that-----

LOL-
If thats all you have to say bad about them--
I'll live with it David......I have been working on that aspect of my shooting....It will come in due time Sir......

But you have seen me progress----It's a world of difference from where I first started...

Not to argue with you-
I'm curious on knowing-But how did you figure out they were 4 stops under?
First of all AK, I was using a bit of CC. I don't think they are bad and I did not say that anywhere in my post, but you said this is what you call the "natural look", so I gave advise on how to get them better. Every pic can be made better no matter how good it looks, so if you don't want to take my advise thats ok b/c I won't post any more CC.:)

How did I come to that conclusion is from looking at hundreds maybe thousands of pics that I have taken and experimented with.

So if I have this right then-
I should be shooting at around a F7 for these shots......
That would make things worse, hense the reason why the need for a flash.

What esentially is a flash? figure that out and anyone will understand a little more.

So an even higher F stop.....

The XTI like I shoot with doesn't to the best with grain/noise at an ISO of 1600--800 is about the max I want to run...

Sorry for the ingnorance here---
Just trying to figure it out...
If you don't want to shoot at that ISO, then you are going to need more light.

And just to be clear, just b/c you don't use a flash does not make it natural.

No dont stop David---
I appreciate all info-Good or bad Sir....
I'm just trying to better understand is all....I'm still very much a dummy in the photography world....AS most can tell--

Basically I'm screwed until I get my cord back then to shoot with my flash...

I'm just really lost now again is all.....Thought I was getting it under control....But once again I have guessed wrong...

I totally agree with the argument that a remote flash is way more beneficial than a fast lens for aquatic photos. As previously stated, when you open the aperture you lose DOF no matter what. The only easy solution is to add a lot of light which is easily done with a flash.

Once you have enough, or even too much light, you can choke the aperture and drop the ISO which will result in pictures with a deep DOF and low noise levels.

Not the case, if you pack as much light over the tank as you can, you can get the same effect. But this usually means having bright 800w lamps which can be difficult to use. A flash is just so much more convienient.

So say with out a remote flash-
How much light would one need above a tank then--Say a 90 gal standard to do what we are talking about here--

Or can't it be done......

Please help the stupid to better understand this---

Sorry for my ignorance here guys---I dont read and comprehend things well---
Hence the reason for multiple ?'s over and over and over again.....

Ok answered the ?'s that I just posted----LOL

So I would be better off right now useing my studio lights rather than my aquarium light for shots (1500watts) until I get my sync cord back then---

Did I understand that one right....

I will be useing a flash with in the next couple weeks-I was suppose to have it alreadyBut bought the wrong cord-So I sent it to my buddy to customize to add an extra 10' to it since I'm a dummy and can't do that either....So In due time I should have all the light I need...

These are the photo's I tried to post earlier. The first is one of the old camping sites that President Teddy Roosevelt had built in the Valley of Fire national park. The second is in Vegas, in the neighbor hood I used to live . The contrast has been changed in both of the photos.
