its not a stereotype, look at the things-pieced together by some money-hungry fool for profit.
To me it is a stereotype since they always talking about BP more than any manmade fishes.

Yet BP has way less health issues than most manmade fishes, so I don't understand why they didn't go after these ones with health issues and weaker strains of a said fish.
Those other fish don't get the attention because they lack the extreme appearance of Blood Reds.I'm willing to bet that most of the people who buy these kinds of fish are either not aware or don't even care about their health issues.

My point is this: One person's monstrosity is another person's picture of beauty. Aquarium keeping is inherently unnatural (as is breeding fish in a glass box). It really comes down to personal taste.
Well said Matt.

It cracks me up when some member(s) feel its some sort of personal attack, and becoming all defensive, when someone else merely gives a personal opinion that they find a particular fish "ugly" or whatever

What's clear is that developing quality lines of fancy fish takes a lot of skill and time (and culling lots of fish). There are far easier ways to make money!

Vety true. Just because i wouldnt care to own a certain doesnt mean i cant admire the care and environment another member gave to that fish.

Just because the BP is ugly does not mean it is suffering. How do we know that cruelty was used create this fish? Most things actually enjoy mating. This thread would have made more sense had we talked about the praying mantis or black widow spider LOL.

I'm not a fan, and prefer fish in the shapes and colors that nature created. I do have a BP that was given to me as a gift by a well meaning family member that had no idea how thes were created. The fish is in my Cichlid tank, is healthy, well looked after, and I don't believe it's suffering. I care for it, as I do for all my other fish, and it will hopefully live full and healthy life. All the colour dyed, tatood and injected fish should be outlawed.

I think Matt summed things up rather well.

I have two "BP" (the version with less of a notch in the head before the body. They were good mates when I had my Lei. For FW, I like their color and their bodyshape. I get the point about their mouths not being able to close - my kids call them up-side-down triangles...LOL. They eat pellets, krills, and blood worms just fine nonetheless. But this is just me.

Oh, they aren't suffering at all...I'm a BP wisperer...

I feel the same about these short body bichirs and catfish... what is so appealing about changing something thats already great. It cannot be more healthy than the product nature produced and its just plain ugly. I was always confused why so many people like BP's and thought what was in the mind of the people that created it.

I can almost understand why certain traits were bred into and out of dogs but with these fish its seems the only results are superficial
My favourite thing about BP's is that you effectively get a large cichlid, with the personality and intelligence; that is pretty much able to cohabit with small community fish.

Mine is in with corydoras, tiger barbs and danios, doesn't even give them a second glance. If I were to go for a midas or a red devil on the other hand... :p

I wouldn't buy one personally because I don't care for the looks of them. My wife how ever thinks they are beautiful. In my opinion, and this is my opinion, if this was the worst thing man has ever done to an animal i'd be all for it.
