I have changed my outlook on this a while back and agree full heartedly with RD on this subject. As loing as the fish has ample room to move around and the constant care (water changes, diet, interaction) there is no reason the fish should be stunted or unhappy in something far less than 1000 gallons.

On the puffer forum pufferpunk wrote a mbus max size is 26inchs and needs a MINIMUM of 1000gallons but when you go to the Fahaka puffer page on the index is states a Fahakas max size is 18inchs and needs a minimum of 120gallons. So why would a extra 8inch of fish need and extra 880gallons???

That is one of the biggest I've heard actually owned by anybody.

Please post some pictures so we can enjoy your fish too.
Excuse my camera skills and scratches on the acrylic, it soon will be buffed out. He got a little fired up when I put the light on. :)

Here is a short video of him

I'm not the person who came up with that number. I've never kept, no will ever have the room for these beautiful fish, to house one properly. The article written that states 1000g was penned by my mentor, Robert T Ricketts, who has been keeping puffers for over 50 years. He is a research scientist, an author & a lecturer on the subject of aquariums & the likes.

Well why write it or let it be written on your forum if it makes no logic?

Robert T Ricketts wrote that article after a failed attempt at trying to keep a mbu long term in a 180 gallon tank. After his single experience with attempting to keep his mbu in a 180 gallon tank, he made a post about what he personally felt the fish truly required (1,000 gallons) which has then been repeated over & over & over again ad nauseum.

Stuart Morse later echoes the same sentiments in his article on Mbu, after his failed attempt at raising his Mbu in a 100 gallon tank. (400 litres to be precise)

And Pufferpunk, while you may not have originally come up with that number, you have probably repeated it more times than anyone else.
