Update time:
I have the glass in place and filled it yesterday to test for leaks. I was fortunate to not find any right away but there might be one after letting it sit over night. I will look again when I get home today. It was outside so it is possibly just from condensation.

The inside is only coated with poly resin and I have heard that it is not 100% waterproof. Although the can it came in said 100% waterproof. Once the tank was filled I notice certain areas that became milky white while the rest of the tank looked shiny. What would cause this, I dont know if you can see it in the pictures or not.

Here are the pics.

When I use poly resin on enclosures (I'm a car audio fitter) the resin will react with the water based glue and go milky white, are the affected areas sticky/tacky?

I have used poly resin before to hold water (resined plywood container, not fish related) and it worked fine for the few weeks I used it for, I don't have any experience with long term immersion though.

hmm, it could still be reacting to the glues in the ply or something else in the wood, how long was the resin cured for before you filled it? Did it still smell of resin?

it sounds to me like the resin did not adhere to the wood very well in those spots....a close up pic could solve this mystery!!

great practice run by the way!!!:headbang2 :headbang2

im amazed to see how big you can go using only ply and scews.....without any support around the outside....i need to stop over designin things!

good luck with the rest of your project man!!!

Oh there will be a center support, I just didnt put it in prior to the water test. This tank is only 4' x 2' x 2' so I would not think alot of support would be needed on the exterior.

I have some pics of the milky looking spots but didn't bring them to work with me. I will try to post them later today. If it is where the resin didn't adhear to the previous layer well how should I solve the problem. 1. strip it all the way down to the wood and re-resin, 2. sand the top coat of resin and re-resin just once. Or another way.

The resin had cured for almost a week. But it said it would only take 2 hours to fully cure on the can. As far as smell it didn't smell at all. Not even the silicone that I had applied the day before as a touch up in some small places I missed.

Here is the pics of the milky color the resin turned. I cleaned it up the first time and added another coat of resin. This time almost the entire bottom turned white. I think I know why though, I applied this coat right at dusk and the tank sat outside on the deck to cure, in the humid north carolina weather. Before I filled it up with water it was already showing the milky color. I think it will be ok, but I am going to use a scotch brite pad and take off the milky color which appears to only be uncured resin. Does anyone else have any suggestions.
Here are the pics.

First person ive seen from NC, good luck with the resin problem. Maybe it has something to do with it drying in the humidity and moisture.

Great job!

I am buying a 120 shortly which is the same dimensions as what you just billed, except it will cost me $600 just for the tank where as you it cost you less then $200 it seems :)

Keep up the great work on the tank/stand.
