The South American puffer, peaceful puffer???

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
Sorry I meant the Congo puffer, could they live with bichirs, bush fish etc? Would they be my best bet?

My bichirs are still small, I also have a little zig zag eel and tyretrack baby

I had a bunch of puffers and the most peaceful have been Congo (schoutedeni) and mbu. Next up are the Carinotetraodon irrubesco and SAP’s but they would nip at fins now and then so I didn’t fully trust them. Also, the SAPs drove me crazy with their glass surfing...they are like avocado puffers and zip around constantly and erratically. I wanted a puffer to chill and hover around but SAPs aren’t like that at all. Plus their teeth will definitely be an issue. Irrubesco are pretty chill but too small and will likely get eaten by your fish.

I’d go with schoutedeni if you really want a small peaceful puffer. I have one now that lives with angelfish, zebra plecos, leopard frog plecos, a pair of gobies, pair of apistos, and some rainbow shiners. Weird mix but it’s my overflow tank and a bunch of stuff gets thrown in. The Congo doesn’t bother anyone except a couple of nips on the angels when they are in the way of some blackworms.

But puffers are definitely hit or miss and their is no peaceful puffer. Each one has a different personality. Tried a bunch before I got this guy and he’s been great

Thanks for the quick reply.

Are the Congos fin nippers? Do their teeth grow very fast and are they relatively easy to take care of? Whats most difficult about keeping them?

Could these live with my bichirs etc in my odball tank?

their teeth are not an issue and congos are not fin nippers. The hardest part about taking care of them is keeping the water clean because they are quite sensitive to poor water quality. The thing is that Congo Puffers are ambush predators, so they won't nip fins, they will attack out of nowhere

My Congo is in with some barbs and cories and hes good. magpie magpie had one in with her polys and he nipped some fins on them. Every puff is going to be a bit different so you will never know for sure. As for teeth ive heard its not an issue with congos but I am still breeding snails and feeding them at least twice a week. He really likes the snails too so it's a win win. The only down side to congos is price and availability.

yeah, congos are great if you don't have the ability to feed hard shelled foods a lot because they don't have teeth that grow super fast and they aren't very active so they don't need as large of a tank, I had one and it killed everything I put in the tank with it

white specter crayfish white specter crayfish are we talking about the same fish here? There is a Congo puffer called Tetraodon Miurus that’s an ambush predator and it’s very very aggressive. It’ll pop out the the sand and strike in a flash. I wouldn’t recommend that at all.

I’m talking about Tetraodon Schoutedeni, also know as, Congo Puffer...I want to make sure OP doesn’t get them mixed up. Schoutedeni are not ambush predators.

S Soul♍ to answer your question, no one could tell you if a puffer would work with your fish since they have their own personalities but you’d have the best luck with a schoutedeni or mbu in my opinion. Like I said, my schoutedeni is with angels and some very pricy plecos and besides a few nipped fins on my angels, he is very peaceful. But YMMV...every puffer is different. Also, their teeth aren’t as problematic as SAPs...i feed mine some crunchy stuff once in a while but he mostly eats market shrimp and worms and he’s doing great.

Oh, yeah two very different fish, I got them confused, sorry about all that. I never kept schoutedeni so I can't really say, but snails, shrimp (with shell), clam on a half shell, crab, crayfish, and other hard shelled foods should be fine

I am talking about the Tetraodon Schoutedeni, sorry I didnt specify enough.

Yup the Schoutedeni is what im talking about too. The other Congo puffer isnt safe with other fish at all.
I dont think their teeth grow all that fast or are all that strong compared to other puffers. But snails should be a large part of the menu. Ive found that while he wants to eat the mts he can't so bladder snails and smaller ramshorns are what I feed. Things like small or dwarf crayfish should be good too. Mine eats bloodworms and krill pretty well also. He will also eat ghost shrimp well. He will not touch frozen clams, fish or shrimp.
Mbu.....only if your tank is huge should you even think about this oh eventually your bank account will need to be also. Thats a 3' puffer eventually. The Tank needs to be at the very least 8×4×4.
