Thinking about a Stingray + Discus tank

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
I had the same combo and had no real problems from the rays.....mine was my discus liked to try and peck out the eyes of my rays. Either way too expensive of fish for me to give it a try again.....

this was what i was going to say too. wasnt my ray but i remember seeing the blinded ray, because the discus it was kept with had eaten its eyes. ... the ray was doing well even though it was blind but still, its not something you would want.

at some point the rays will have ago at any fish they can fit under their disc no matter how long its peaceful for. ive had plecs, oscars and arowans killed by rays chewing on them ( not to mention others or fish that ive euthanased because of ray injuries or damaged themselves so badly that they later died from trying to escape the rays) .

rays are preditors and will try eat whatever they think they can make fit in their mouth. not to mention the habbits of the fish you are putting in.

** additional, just remembered the 2 foot fire eel that was occasionally chewed on or the 12 " plec that still turns up with bite marks now and again and the spotted gar thats in there ( fully grown ) that appears occasionally with red fins ( presumably from being chewed on ) but he does well enough .

If you made sure the stingrays were well feed and the discus were big enough. Another reason why it could work is stingrays are banthic dwelling fish meaning they are at the bottom of the tank most of the time and the discus ate free swimmers the rays would have to get pretty hungry before they went after the discus. So over all if you got big 6-7" discus ant 4-4.5" rays that don't get big such as teacups i personally feel like that the rays would leave each other alown

It really does not matter if a fish is benthic or pelagic... Predatory fish prey on anything that moves. Its really only a matter of time. I currently have a discus in my tank with motoros, everything is going ok so far, but that could change overnight. Rays are always hungry, they have a very high metabolism because they move around constantly. Of course there are other factors involved. It depends on the individual fish. I have kept 3" damsels with 2' sharks before. However, I have also lost a 14" grouper to a 18" bamboo shark... Rays are essentially flat sharks, and they have big appetites.

I think that's allot of it. Are you feeding your rays enough or a good amount so they don't go after fish. If they are fat all the time and know food comes everyday to keep them fat then they will not go after fish.

I have seen plenty of rays just bite a head off or suction one to the side. They live fine for a long time but when one gets a taste of it that one will usually keep doing it.

I have lost a lot to rays over the years. Great with a tig for 2 years, then darted and killed him for no reason. Great with fronts for over a year, ate one one night, and then 4 the next day, guessed they like african cuisine. Peacock bass about 17 inches and royal clown knife about 24 inches both with rays over a year before they darted them. Flagtail and tinfoild barbs good until they develop a taste then it is over.

Point is it can work for a while, but have a place for the discus after the first one goes down or you will lose them all quickly.

Discus will be fine with teacup stingrays, I had them in a 6ft 2ft 2ft tank & they lived happily together , I had small pea gravel , they loved the pea gravel they could hide in it & look for food in it, with sand they seam to hide a lot more .

Other larger stingrays will probably hunt & kill Discus when they get full grown but teacups will be fine .

I had large Discus & small discus, the stingrays where bought as baby's but soon grew, they have very long tails compared to motoro

I once too posted about doing this and was advised not to because of the possibilty of a discus' face gettings eaten. I ended up going with indo dats since they are faster and a bit meaner as posted a while back in this thread.

Needless to say one of the 5 (a smaller one) got its face sucked clean off the first night I turned all the tank lights off and I always keep my rays fat and purposely over fed them that night to give the dats the best possibility of survival when I added my 14" flower ray. They were good for a week or so till I turn off all the lights one night.

I imagine discus are slower and I am sure they are more expensive. Some have done it here with success but I wouldn't risk the discus.
The dats I have are a solid 4 inches and the one that got its face eaten was about 3inches and very agressive feeder. So far so good with the larger ones tho.... but I remove the 3" and smaller. I still leave the blue leds on at night tho (and its causing hella algae) lol atleast till they get a tad bit larger :-P
Maybe you'll be better off with retics (teacups) as suggested.

On a side note, I thought the flower ray had done the damage but one night I suddenly turned the lights on at night and I saw a dat up against the corner and I swear my 6" marbled motoro was ina pouncing position right under it. I think I saved that dats a**... She's a fatty and will never stop looking for food even with a full belly and a fat bump on her head from storing fat

it might work for ever. it might work for a little. or maybe not at all. i tried it and it worked for i would say 2 years. and then one day my ray was to hungry and ate one of the discus and then had a liking to eating them. that ended that. also i have hurd of discuss going crazy and picking on a ray untill almost all of its skin is off. good luck. post picks.
