Well, in the end, after all the scientific talk on here, as a hobbyist who's kept over 50 tanks in my years, with my cities water, if you did not have other filtration running, established tank or not, you wash your filter media out with tap, you were in for a nightmare, me, my freinds, and the LFS guys and gals the same.

This is yet another one of the useless long winded MFK threads where only a few remaining members post, no one learns anything new and I am reminded why I visit less and less.
Yeah, totally. I was thinking the same when I read the recent thread for the POTM contest. Outrageous, and far more long winded than this discussion!

Then I got thinking, and realized that no one was holding a gun to my head and forcing me to read or comment on anything posted on MFK, or for that matter even click my mouse and L@@K. And maybe, just maybe, someone else reading the POTM thread might have actually learned something, something that perhaps I thought was a waste of time, or not worthy of my valuable time. I mean, not everyone is as smart as I. Hmmmmm. How dare I not take their point of view into consideration. Who the hell do I think I am?

Sorry everyone, just thinking out loud.

Ain't that the truth, lol. I've already PM'd deadeye and apologised for my shameful part in that thread. I was having a bit of a rant regarding the competition and dropped a clanger of a comment in there which several members picked up on and before you know it it's chaos, lol.

But like you said, some member somewhere on the forum may have read through the carnage and picked up some invaluable and life changing information from all that rubbish! Lol.

And in all fairness, I have yet to come across a forum where total derailment of threads never happens. I think it adds to the overall enrichment of a public forum.

Ive gotten a lot of good info from you over the years but its pitiful watching you long for the good ol days or whatever all the time.

That ruckus was entirely my fault. I should have kept my beak shut. I've learned my lesson, and I want to apologize to everyone who felt hurt, posted, or saw the thread. You guys were just having fun, but I took it too seriously. My apologies once again.

This is an absurd post for a member of a comunity where so many people are sharing and learning, noobs and veterans, no idea why you would pop on with this negativity.

Something I also always try to keep in mind, is the number of visitors that come to this site daily, and never join. Just as I did for a couple of years back in 2005-2006. I read, I learned, I LMAO at times, and shook my head many times. But I took away a lot of a great info from some of the past members here, long before I joined the forum. Thousands of golden nuggets of information are found here on MFK, when certain topics get entered into search engines such as google. If nothing else I feel that we all add a healthy dose of common sense, to a world of social media outlets & influencer wannabes that more often than not, get things wrong.

exactly, i've been here since 07 and accept that you will see lots of the same stuff come up, I've kept tons of tanks, bred reptiles and inverts for 36 years or so, and sure you can search old threads but lots of new people show up with new views or they may have stronger arguments so sometimes it's nice to revive topics.

Unfortunately when something happened with my account years back it didn't save all my thread, like and post counts lol, oh well lol.

Last several years I've been so busy and have had just two tanks running for the last 5 or 6 years so hardly ever on here.

Good to see lots of smart nice ppl, but I see there are still some terds lmao

I guess we better get back on topic tho

take care man

Hello; First, I acknowledge some off topic but important points were made. Good to emprise the risks of tap water with chloramines and that a fish keeper needs to know what their water is treated with. Good post from duanes about test strips so a homeowner can get an idea of the strength of chloramines at their tap. Information worth having so a WC can be done without issues.

OK back on topic. After reading all the posts and watching the video. A main sticking point for some was the video showed rinsing filter parts with tap water. The first crime was his audacity to say he did not see any harm to the tank from doing this. Followed by a claim he did not feel the tap water killed off too much of the BB by doing so. Then he capped the atrocity by reassembling the filter and putting it back into use. Followed by a scene of the tank sometime later.
I wonder if any follow up videos of that same tank might exist. That way if all was good with the fish shown we all could see they are OK. Another thing on my wish list would be if the guy did a series of tests for ammonia levels in the next days on the same tank. Those of you who are into those videos might know a way to contact the guy and suggest such a thing. A form of dogma says he made a dire mistake and made false claims. Perhaps he will back up his claims with proof?

Taking various things into account I suggested ways the use of tap water to clean a nasty tank. Even these appear to not have passed muster so far. Lets put those suggestions aside for a bit and get back to something which received little attention. That being how to clean a filter as nasty as the one in the video. It cannot be that filters never get nasty or clogged up to the point of needing a thorough cleaning. A cleaning more than swissing the parts in old tank water. Two suggestions were made. One by me.
Another suggested the use of RId-X to prevent the buildup in filters. I did try the RID-X in a tank for a time. Not long enough to find out much about it. Had an outbreak of small beetles in th RID-X box.
