  • If you have multiple tanks, or more a fishroom, have many spare hooks near tanks. This is always handy when you quickly need to hang a net or something up with one hand.
  • I have metal stands., so a net or two have magnets glued to them. I can basically throw the net at the shelf and it sticks.
Been thinking of sewing small magnets into my clean up clothes for this reason.
  • I have successfully moved fry from one tank to a nearby tank by first removing 50% water from the "new" tank then using a small gauge hose to siphon the fry into the new tank. Removes the middle man container.
  • If you are forgetful, keep a small bag of high quality food in the freezer. When you realize you have no food left, open the back-up and get to the shops.
  • Buy 2, cheap, dedicated hoses for tanks. I use the see through plastic hoses. 1 for siphoning, the other with a u-shaped, rigid pipe for refilling. They can go at the same time and cut times in half or do 2 tanks at the same time.
  • When I have wanted to clean a tank but not do a water change, I have siphoned water through a homemade bottle filter ending in fine filter floss and returned "mulmless" water to the tank.

Especially the red highlighted comment?
i’m not generalizing but many tanks that i’ve seen in china where i lived have been heavily overstocked or kept in sub par conditions. ie 7 asian arowana in a small 180g and while it’s true that they can survive with enough filtration, is definitely not ideal.

this doesn’t equate to all mfkeepers in china, just most that i’ve seen have tanks with malpractice

More tips

Use a mortar and pestle to mix and grind pellets, insects, etc. Perfect for making fry food from larger pellets and for fish with small mouths.

Dust insects with reptile vitamin powder to supplement.

Meat thermometers are accurate and relatively cheap. Also magnetic...you can stick them on metal stands for convenience.

Hot salt water is also good for cleaning old dry algae from artificial plants. Use scalding hot water (gloves!)

Use eye droppers to feed liquid medications. Drop water on the fish's mouth to get them to open wide.

Prevent pellet spills during feeding by using plastic spoons and waving pellets in the water. My blood parrots come up to eat pellets right from the spoon. For large populations use an old plastic soup spoon.

(will add more as I remember)
