I’ve been out of touch this week, due to a family crisis. My oldest daughter, Brittany, is 44, and was healthy until two weeks ago. 10 days ago she went into the hospital (Strong Memorial Hospital in Rochester, NY), with abdominal pain. The doctors were not sure what her problem was – – gallbladder, colon, or ??
2 days later, she had exploratory surgery, and a hysterectomy, “just in case”. The day after that, she was back in OR and had surgery on both lower legs, with removal of part of the calf muscles for infection—Group A Strep. That bacteria is common, causing strep throat, but if it gets in the deeper soft tissues, it’s more like gangrene. The next day she was back in the OR, and had both lower legs removed as well as her left hand!! They still don’t know how she caught it.
She is now doing better (no longer at death’s door), but will be in the hospital for 2 months, probably, followed by a rehab facility. She is conscious but not fully aware, and doesn’t know about her legs yet. Her 12 year old daughter will visit today or tomorrow.
How is that possible? Healthy one day and a triple amputee 10 days later, without any injury… So fast and so unexplained.
