Thanks to Alex's persuasion over the few occasions and me pondering how will my tpg fit in my current 4feet, I called up N30 for a quotation for a 633 :D

And there is silly me trying to sell my 1 day old Ehiem 2080 on all the forums I could post on.

let's see if I can get them anyway. Figured if I sold everything I have now, could raise about 1k.

Plus selling off that giant Panaque I have, should raise 2+k. Then add in 2-3months NS pay, should be enough :D

But before that, need ask my parents for a space in my never-utilised living hall. Its been 7 years and I only sat there less than 5 times -.-

is there anyone who have cheap "lobang"/recommendations for big tanks? Will need one with cabinet though.

About my gars, the colors are getting better but I'm going for size for now :P wish it adds another inch with 1 week :D

Will update when I book out of camp again!

LOL I think you have a while before the TPG can out grow a 4x2x2.
I have mine in a 4x2x2, but won't be for life... Since I'm probably moving to Vancouver in a few years.

Anyways, you can get some cheaper deals on AF, several hundreds dollars should get you a tank of that size, cabinet and all.

The problem is.. Mine is not 422 :( only 4x1.5x1.8. That's why I have a constant feel to upgrade.

To Schmike: if the tail will not grow back, won't its movement be affected forever?

Hi all. While reading up online, I came across a resource which states that female gars have nearly double the lifespan of a male gar. how true is that?

And besides a dissection, what are clues which may help determine the sex of a gar?

External sexing is impossible although it is safe to assume that old gars that are -much- larger are female.

came home late so didn't have chance to try out other food type.

a short clip of its feeding:

there is nearly double the time to maturity in most gar species between males and females (males mature faster), but in terms of lifespan there is not that large or a discrepancy. this may also vary from species to species, but in our ageing studies we have definitely found very old male gars (unexpectedly).

there are several factors that go into trying to sex a gar externally, and there is no 100% surefire way without doing some lab tests on slime or blood samples or just cutting them open (or if you see the gars release eggs or milt). the size issue is more for wild specimens, we can make an educated guess on captive specimens, but that doesn't seem to hold as much as it does with wild fish...and even with wild fish we've been wrong (found big mature males, small mature females).

in short, no practical way to sex hobby fish externally--
