Yes male. They will bar and fade back to normal for lots of reasons nothing to be alarmed about.

Any thoughts?

Definitely a Festae, and looks male to me. Females tend to have a thick black band on the dorsal fin and much less pearling with a more orange/red base color.

At what size will he start getting adult colors? I know he won't be as red orange as a female, but when will he get the nice yellow orange green colors?

My male didn't start to really show color until about 4", now at 6-7" he's very handsome with deep red fins throughout, lots of pearling and a very nice tan/yellow color for his base. He shows his bars quite often but doesn't appear to be the least bit stressed.

He's a monster. He's killed 3 convicts now. 2 were his friends when he was a fry.
