Hello folks, I'm thinking about putting some terrestrial plants in plants in my turtle pond, so I was wondering what species are safe if the turtle decide to nibble?

Thanks!

Anyone got any tips on what kind of aquatic plants they can safely eat?

I've been gathering some local terestrials like chickweed that are edible (by humans and animals alike) and my turtle seems to love them, lol. Am in the process of planning a paludrium, so planning it all out & testing what he likes ; )

I know I ready somewhere tat java mosses & java ferns are ok for them, and now I've discovered my RES boy LOVES chickweed straight out of my grandfather's hard (& it's surprisingly growing very well in a small planter just keeping it watered with tank water so it has lots of ewwies to munch on. Will post more as I find it (hectic right now trying to get stuff done for RFL)

Why not grow spinach, lettuce, collards, etc.? You know they're not only safe but nutritious, and you can buy seed packets for next to nothing. Just resow every few days for a constant supply.

I always used water hyacinth, water lettuce, anacharis and hygrophila with my turtles. They really enjoyed eating water lettuce the most. When I kept mine outdoors I used a lot of different types of native bog plants and water lilies.

I've tried a few species with my RES so far, even most of the ones claimed to put turtles off because of their bitter taste, but to no avail. I've got some basic bogbean plants and essentially "weeds" from ponds arriving this week to try in the aquarium in the hope that they will grow quick enough to survive.

Best tip, find the latin name of a plant species you want to use, and fire it into google followed by "toxic" and see if anything shows. That's where I start with my choices :)

you can put hydrilla.sp(strong plant but still need a routine lighting ,not need CO2 ) or some waterlettuce(but this plant need a high lighting)

if you put plant on your tank you must know the risk
as we know average water turtle are really messy and there is a risk he will destroy it,but the advantage is water plant will be a veggie filter which absorbing amoniac, produce 02 and will increase the quality of your water tank
think about it dude
