I'm in the middle of one of those "what-kind-of-fish-should-I-add-to-my-tank" nightmares that make the hobby worthwhile. I will have a clown knife and a silver aro in my 220 for sure. I am considering some catfish, but I've recently become intrigued by the idea of a small school of silver dollars. I'm not familiar with them, but I think I would like the red hook variety best. Any thoughts or PICS? Which types/species have more red in the fins as adults? Are any considerably more demanding than others? Any help or pics will be much appreciated.

I had a group of 4 of the commonly found Metynnis hypsauchen (I believe) in my 90gal. Very active fish, grew to 5-6" very quickly, and ate like pigs. They had a good amount of red in their anal fins and when they were in formation they looked fantastic!

Awesome pics! Since posting the thread, I picked up 7 red hook silver dollars. They are ~2.5 inches long. The only dif I see between red hooks and the kind you have is that the hooks' anal fin sticks down further but doesn't run as far back toward the caudal fin (ie. ~same amt of red). That may change as they grow. I've been pretty busy, but will post pics soon. By the way, what kind of Geophagus are those in the pics? Surinamenses (sp?)?

Thanks. I think the red hooks will look awsome cruising around in a large tank like your 220gal. I had to rehome mine when they got too big for my 90gal.

The geos in the pics are dicrozoster....

I just added 7 nickel sized SDs to my "hope I get a pair out of all these juvi pike" tank and the little bastards had ick. My bad for not putting in quarantine. Pikes will live, dont know about the SDs.

Anyone have any trouble with their silver dollars beating each other up? I have three and two of them have badly nipped fins! I'm getting three more soon and I'm hoping that the addition makes them stop.
