Most of the time, the problem with free water fractionation, is that people don't use a strong enoughpump/flow. Because salt water is more dense that fresh, it is easy to disrupt the air water interface, so creating foam waste is simple.
With fresh water, much more agitation is required to separate the components.
Here is a short video of one of my DIY fractionators working on a small pond (aprox 500 gallon) . I'm running a flow of about 1200gph straight into the biomedia of the fractionator, this cascading action fractures the water and air interface, separating proteins, free floating algae, and other waste products. And as you can see, producing plenty of waste. Click the pic to start.

If that is the case a wet/dry or a submerged sump would be your best bed. Do mind the weight capacity of your floor. A submerged sump will increase the weight greatly.
Floor should be good I think. I have a few plants in main tank. Thanks Jesse
