I wouldn't go for exodons, they're definitely gonna need a bigger tank and a bigger school, same with tiger barbs.
I would go with either a pair of honduran red points, a single male apisto, bolivian rams, GBR, guppies and ancistrus, cherry barbs, neons, cardinals, platies, or a couple wild bettas.

I hate to disappoint but there is no fish that will satisfy your quest to find "the" fish. I have been keeping fish for over fifty years and still can`t be satisfied. The answer is not which fish but how many tanks will it take? Good luck with that.

Exactly, I've kept so many fish but haven't been satisfied and likely never will be, I've kept everything from bass, large catfish, arowanas, gars, piranhas, exodon, sun fish, eels, bichirs, lungfish, tanganyikan cichlids, malawi cichlids, victorian cichlids, central and south american cichlids, doviis, red devils, you name it, but I still can't be satisfied.

Cutcutia puffer. 3.5 inch fish (Tetraodon cutcutia).
20g long and lots of hiding places. Eheim 2217 canister spraybar.
Fast, curious, not shy with LED lighting, super friendly freshwater species.
'Little brat bites me like a bird almost evertime I adjust things.
The 2nd one stayed much smaller being less than 3 inches.
Straight forward happy go lucky puffer fish.
