Hi,

My silver arowana is showing signs of dropsy. He's been having a severe case of fin rot which we treated with medication that did not help. I even tried to turn up the temp higher and added salt to see if it helps and it didn't.

Now my silver arowana is showing signs of dropsy where his scales on the bottom near his stomach is lifting up. It's not really noticeable until you look really close. I started the medication treatment of Mardel Maracyn-Two. Today is the third day of treatment and I did not notice any improvement. I tested the water parameters before I started the medication and everything was 0. Now that I just tested the water ammonia, nitrite is at 0.50 and nitrate is at 0.25 and pH of 7.6. I wasn't sure if the tank is being medicated that I could do a water change or not.

I was wondering if anyone have any suggestions for me to help my arow. I really would appreciate it. I really hope he'll stay alive.

sorry that this is happening to your fish...I cannot help you but here might be some things that will help others help you

size of tank
tank mates
filtration
tank stock (all of the fish in the tank)
what do you feed and how offten
tank maintenance? how often and how much do you do water changes

and all of your test results from the tank. ..pics of the fish if possible

I doubt that everything is 0 in your tank... i would be shocked if you had 0 nitrates in your tank. Please provide tank size and stock etc

hi wendy.c,

could you post some pics please.. prob a lot of people might disagree with me.. but i had a similar situation with one of my aros.. scales lifting up around the stomach.. i actually treated the aro with doxycycline and lactic acid bacillus.. the human variant.. the only good thing was the aro was eating.. so i mixed it up with the food (anchovies) and fed to all my fish.. i think in about ten days gradually the scales were down and all has been normal.. maybe you could.. but i really doubt if you could get over the counter antibiotics in the US.. check with a vet prob you could get somethin.. cheers..

ps. how old is the aro.. how big.. any other info.. like what you feed etc?

I did have everything 0 in my tank before i took out the carbon filter out for the medication process. Now the water quality is different and i just did a wc to help it go down. Currently my silver arow is in a 20gallon tank i know it's small but I am going to get a bigger tank once it grows bigger. He is the only fish in the tank. My silver arow is about 6 to 7 inches. I feed him the Hirakui floating pellets. I do a wc once a week that is about 20% of the water. He is eating normally. I dont see any bloating besides a severe fin rot and the scales are lifting.

What about the filtration? could you give some details on that please.. yes, like you agree, a 20G is small.. thats about roughly 80 ltrs of water and 20% is only 16 ltrs.. you could aim at WCs more often.. atleast twice a week and def 50% on each go.. cheers..

for filteration i have a rena filstar xp1 filter

Cool.. generally.. this is how i look at it.. i would recommend a minimum of 10X turn over per hour on glass tanks.. so 20G X 10 times an hour is close to 200G TPH.. an XP4 would actually be good.. yes.. it does sound overkill.. but over filtration is def better.. the smaller the volume of water the more chances it will deteriorate quicker..
