Using Stress zyme for water changes
I have a 55 gallon tank and use API stress zyme. The directions says to add 5ml per 10 us gallons. If I do a 15 gallon water change do I only need to add 15 gallons worth of stress zyme? Or enough...

Yes just add what is equivalent to the amount of new water.

Eh... Stress Zyme is mainly used as a bacteria starter (though it still does dechlorinate the water).
You are looking at Stress coat for a dechlorinator. I recommand Seachem Prime as it is much cheaper than most commercial dechlorinators available. You pay more but it treats so much more water.

As to your question yes, when you change 15g of water in your tank add the amount of dechlorinator equivalent to 15g of water. This is because there should only be chlorine/chloroamine in that 15g and not in your tank water. Though personally I add a 2x dose of Prime.

Took the words right out of my mouth.

1st and formost that brand stress coat sucks. Seachem prime is what i use on water changes and what probaully most people on here use as well. If you are concerned about adding bacteria allso when you do water changes. use prime along with seachem stability. Both are available at petsmart or petco i hate to promote them but they are every were. Can pick up bottles of both for about 18 bucks and those bottle will be good for atleast 4 months doing weekly 50 percent or less water changes on that size tank.

Because of dilution factor Prime states " If adding directly to aquarium, base dose on aquarium volume." So on a 55 gallon aquarium changing 15 gallons add prime to dose 55 gallons.

Besides what is your tap chlorine and/or chloramine levels in order to effectively dose your water the package directions assumes a base concentration of chloramine... My city water levels fluctuates so I stopped python water changing......

If the water is from the tap then you should treat for the whole tank, not just the amount you put in.

The whole debate about a water conditioner being cheaper or treating more water is relative to the fish keeper. I use Microbe-Lift only in my tanks, there is no product on the market that even comes close to it, not even prime. It may be a little more expensive (can find cheaper online) but it's chemical free and although it does not treat as many gallons as Prime, it still treats 41 gallons, not too far off from Prime. A 16 oz bottle of ML dechlorinator treats 4000 gallons. It's very concentrated so a capful will probably work just like Prime. Since I use like five of the ML products, I would need to find a replacement for each one. So far API seems to be the only thing that can come close. Aside from Prime, I have not been impressed with Seachem and for API it has the backing of fish keepers who have been using API products for years, that says a lot. API is cheaper but I hate the awful cap, it's the most annoying design ever, they should change it. Their directions for dosage is also very annoying and not very clear whereas the ML products are easy to dose.

I think it comes down to how often you need/use the product. In the long haul, quality is better, so is peace of mind knowing that only one brand/product is going in your tank vs several and you just know it's going to work, I can't tell you how good that feels.

ML products are used by pond masters primarily, but it works better than any of the other Aqua products. $15 for dechlorinator sucks, but if it lasts for up to 1 year then it's not a big deal. My top ML Five: special blend, nite-out II, super-dechlorinator, herbtana (parasites), atemiss (fungus).

API - ML equivalents: tap water conditioner, stress-zyme, melafix, pemafix.

I thought about how I could save money by only buying the 4 oz bottles and seeing how long I can make those last. A $4-5 API tap water conditioner bottle is good for 31 water changes on a 75 gallon tank, about 7 months worth.
