I was wondering if I should get a UV sterilizer for my planted tank, because of black algae. There is some green algae (i don't care about it) but a lot of black algae. I would like to get the one petsmart has (Internal UV Sterilizer w/Power Head & Lamp Replacements). So in is this a good sterlilizer and will it get rid of black algae.

What will kill the old black beard?

Florida flag fish eat black beard algae. Grammarus (scuds) will eat black beard algae. You can also kill the black beard algae with hydrogen peroxide (use a syringe).

Increase your CO2 levels, increase circulation and lower the intensity and/or duration of your lights. These will prevent future growth.

Getting rid of it now can be done with manual cleaning (toothbrush) or using a solution of hydrogen peroxide or Excel.

I have some beard algae on those parts of my manzanita that are not covered in plants and are very close to the lights. Nothing I can do but scrub it off regularly as my CO2 is pretty high already.
