Previously? According to what source? Could someone please cite the specific source of that information?
IOW, when was it that "the other Paratheraps species were all previously under the genus Vieja," as you say, and according to whom?
Cichlid-forum, a profile website that I 'generally' adhere to regarding genus and species names has them listed under
Vieja, which is what I've been referring to them as in the past.
Cichlidae.com has them listed and explained under
Paratheraps after a reclassification from
Cichlasoma in 1987, with referencing, but provide no information on the genus
Vieja. This is the problem with reclassifications and generalized internet websites and profiles.
Prior to this moment, I would have also referred to
fenestratus as
Vieja fenestratus, but regardless of classification, you have to admit that the genus'
Paratheraps and
Vieja hold members that are
very physically similar, so I don't see why there's any reason to get on anyones back over the genus names, especially when many sources on the web (the fastest but apparently not the most effective fish research tool) refer to them as
Vieja.
I'll continue to refer to them as
Vieja, personally.
