Wels catfish, albino, ~10"

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
So the plan had to be changed and the wels went into the 25K, after we removed all the smallest fish from there.

There has been a ton of concern about wels preying on tank mates but so far, a month in, it hasn't touched any and in fact is feeding exceptionally well, like never before, being hand fed each evening 2-4 thawed herring, about 8" each, soaked in VitaChem.

The wels has been doing quite well in the 25K. It hasn't touched any tank mates. It has eaten more in 2 months than in 2 prior years and doubled in circumference.

Thank y'all, appreciate it.

... I would of put money on him eating some tank mates maybe easy food giving to him outweighs hunting...
I think so. It hasn't eaten or evidently even attempted to eat any tank mates, neither in the 25K, nor in our 4-year preceding history with it. I monitor its stomach in the first place and its appetite also. It eats daily from 2 to 3 thawed fortified herring, about 8" in size. If it ate any tank mate, the smallest of which are far larger, the stomach would be obviously huge and the wels would skip a day or several until eating again. This has never happened so far. No bite marks on tank mates either... although the fish is a bit territorial and bumps and pushes tank mates out of its preferred night spot in the current right where I hand feed it, but it doesn't snap at them or bite them, only nudges and head bumps, even if with mouth naturally open a bit, which is peculiar but I am grateful for it.

Of course we know the predation is a possibility, so we are watching it like a hawk.

It looks like the wels reached 4.5-5 ft. Recently stopped feeding well though, only 1-2x week. May be from prior overfeeding, or due to warmer water or due to too hard water for too long. I am reducing the hardness now to test. The water in the exhibit is made hard by the addition of straight well water (low end brackish).

Lookin good as always Vik! Nice update...Pretty normal for “summer” IMO.... he should pick back up feeding again in the fall or whenever it starts cooling down in ur area ?. Looks to be right on track size wise for 6yrs with my old specimen. I only ever fed mine once a week at that size. Even in Ohio id witness the same feeding habits in the warmer months here. 1 tilapia filet a week was normal, during the fall cool down he picked back up to 4-5 fillets once a week. As ive stated before they really dont eat nearly as much as the media says they do or even do much for that matter lol...

We have recently introduced a bunch of new fish into the 25K, where wels lives. Four vulture catfish, 22-26", six giraffe catfish, 20"-30", two knives, 22" and 26", and Wallagonia leerii, 30". A peer from France, who makes great fish posters, commented, so I'll copy and paste it here:

nicolas florencio hello, I would like to have a feedback on the behavior of the wels catfish vs wallago Attu. because i have a friend who had a flathead catfish and his wels catfish killed him In europe the silurus glanis is the biggest predator, it still hasn't eaten any other fish in the pond?

Fish Story, a DIY Public Aquarium & Fish Rescue Thank you. Ours is not an attu. This is Wallagonia leerii or micropogon. The leerii suffered non-serious damage in the first day or two, supposedly from the wels catfish. It had healed up quickly and no more damage has been observed since. Leerii is a timid fish, at least IME, the ones we have had were not aggressive by any means, they don't appear to have and defend any territory, which is logical as they often stay mid water. Bottom-dwelling flathead catfish I have never kept but reading tells us they are aggressive, territorial, and will attack and defend their perceived space. Not too surprising an outcome if your friend's wels was far bigger than a flathead, that the flathead got killed. In terms of predation... Our wels hasn't manifested so far any interest in the smaller tank mates. We monitor this closely, rest assured. The smallest koi in there is a show quality platinum ogon bought little for $300, currently at 14", easily swallowable by the wels. It's been in the 25K for 2 months. No problem. There are also tinfoil barbs and bala sharks, some of which are well under a foot. All has been well. Doesn't mean it can't change overnight. We watch.

I'll note that one of the vultures also was bitten on the head/snout early on upon the introduction but not too seriously and recovered fine over a couple weeks. I too suspect Mr. Wels. No other problems have been noted yet.
